If you have dogs at home, you can learn how to communicate with them in the most effective way just like your kids. Dogs are not just animals that you feed and leave to fend for themselves; instead, they are pets who need to be treated just like a member of the family. The good thing about knowing how to communicate properly with dogs is that you can teach them easily and make them listen to you.

You can treat your dog just like the member of the family if you know how to communicate with them. While dogs are animals, they can be like people in so many ways except that they cannot say words. They talk in terms of barking and their actions and most of the time, they act like little kids around. I always treat my dogs just like little kids.

There are different ways by which you can communicate with your dogs.

Talk to them just like how you talk to people.

Those who do not have dogs find it weird to talk with dogs but this is the most common and most effective way of communicating with dogs. Do not think that dogs cannot understand because they do and one thing is certain; if you talk to them in a normal way, you will find out that they could understand what you are trying to convey to them verbally. When you always talk to your dogs; they will know what you are telling them the next time you talk to them. If you tell them that it’s time to eat, they will sit and wait for their food on the same spot where you usually place their dish.

Use sign language to teach them.

Sign language is a very effective way to communicate with dogs. While talking to your dogs, point to what you are talking about in order for them to understand better what you are trying to tell them. If you want your dog to do their thing outside the house, point outside and tell them to go out and pee or move their bowels. If they refuse to follow you, move and go outside so that they will follow you outside. Once you are outside that’s the time you can tell them the proper place to pee. Teaching dogs using sign language is good because they will understand you better. For example, your dog peed on the floor and you saw it. Go to your dog and point to the mess on the floor. You can spank your dog or you can scold him and show him the proper place to pee. This will teach your dog a lesson so that the next time he pees, he will go to the right place to do his thing.

Give incentives for a good deed done.

It is not only the kids who need incentives for good deeds done. Dogs also need praises and other incentives for a good deed. If your dogs behaved, they need your praise. This could either be patting them and saying, “very good” or giving them food to eat or toys to play with. Once your dogs have done something good, it is important that they realize it. This will make them better dogs.

Punish them.

Dogs should be punished too. If your dogs bite, explain through sign language that biting is bad. It is important that your dogs will realize that biting is not good. If they mess on the floor, scold them and show them the proper place to pee and do their thing. But you have to explain to them why you acted that way. You can also lock a biting dog inside the dog house and tell him that he cannot go out unless he behaves.

Teach them about emotions.

Hugging, patting, caressing and kissing your dogs will teach them about emotions. Although some people despise kissing dogs, there are some dog owners who kiss their pets to show how much they love their pets. Expressing your emotions to your dogs is one way of communicating with them and teaching them about feelings. Dogs are lovable animals with different emotions just like people. It is important that you make them feel the different emotions from you. If they curl beside you, that means they need to be cuddled.

Communicating with dogs is not hard. You can have your own way of communicating with them. Each dog owner has his own way of communicating with his pets. You can choose which one works with your pets.

Thanks Bob. I do give my dogs every food that I eat. Just a bit of it so that they wills top pestering us. Once they have a taste they will move away and play to each other. They always love tasting our food.

Very good Masmasika. We have a 4 year old Jack Russell Terrier. Got him about 8 months ago. He is learning, but can be very stubborn to get his way about some things. He grew up with two cats and two little girls so he missed out on rough housing and play time, but is

picking it up now. He will eat part of his meal and leave the rest, but pester us for human food which we do

not give him. My wife is very good about talking to him as a person. I am his play time friend. Bob

Thelma, dogs behave well when they are treated well. Just like our kids they behave according to how we raise them. Thanks for hopping in my hub. Great to know you also love dogs.

This is a very informative hub! I have a cavalier king charles dog, Angus. He is a very behave dog. I treat my dog like he is a member of my family, as if he is my "son" that I sometimes called him with the name of my son. It was weird at first, when angus came into our lives that I talk to him like I talk to a person. I could not imagine anymore, a life without Angus. Thanks for sharing.
